Mazaska is a Lakota word for money -- and we know that money talks. We are leveraging collective economic power to fight the repression of indigenous rights & desecration of Mother Earth. Mazaska Talks grew from the indigenous-led Defund DAPL Seattle Coalition that pressured Seattle to move towards divesting $3 billion from Wells Fargo over their involvement in the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). Since Seattle became the first City in the United States to divest itself from the banks funding the Dakota Access Pipeline, Mazaska Talks has been advising cities, tribes and individuals across the country to do the same. ----------------------------------------------------- Any bank that does not end financing of non-consensual pipelines after the horror that unfolded around DAPL, wittingly finances the repression of indigenous rights and does not deserve public taxpayer, tribal, or NGO money. Our mission is to leverage economic power to fight repression of indigenous rights, promote indigenous rights to Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), fight the corporate desecration of Mother Earth, and promote a just transition to a green economy that recognizes human and environmental rights. Mazaska Talks will fulfill its mission by helping tribes, NGO’s, foreign nations, corporations, universities, state governments, municipal governments, and other institutions: 1. Divest from all banks that finance non-consensual fossil fuel projects, like the Dakota Access, Keystone XL, Line 3, Trans Mountain, and Pipelines; 2. Honor indigenous rights to Free Prior and Informed Consent in banking practices; and 3. Reinvest in banking alternatives (mission-aligned and public banks) that will sustain the next Seven Generations. ----------------------------------------------------- On May 9, 2017, a powerful coalition of organizations launched a campaign on MazaskaTalks.org against 64 banks that could finance 4 non-consensual pipelines: Keystone XL, Line 3, Trans Mountain, and Energy East pipelines.
