These are turbulent times, but the progressive organization We the People – Mt. Prospect Area is committed to the belief that goodness will ultimately prevail. We are fully aware that such an outcome will not come easily. Achieving positive social and political change takes a concerted effort that starts at the grassroots level and filters up to local, state and national elected offices. Our group was spurred into existence by the worldwide women’s marches that took place the day after the presidential inauguration. Following those demonstrations, a handful of individuals from Chicago’s northwest suburbs assembled for what was envisioned as a one-off postcard-writing campaign aimed at government officials. The enthusiasm at that gathering proved to be contagious, and now We the People is a permanent fixture that is hundreds of volunteers strong and growing rapidly. Operating under the umbrella of the Indivisible organization, We the People focuses on a number of areas that are under attack by the current administration. Prominent among those are women’s rights, LBGTQ rights, immigrant and refugee rights, environmental/climate issues, education, preserving the Affordable Care Act and promoting diversity. Our initiatives have been robust, ranging from attending town halls and bolstering demonstrations to partnering with legislators, registering voters, and identifying and supporting candidates who are aligned with our causes. This is only the beginning, but as we are quickly discovering, every act, no matter how small, makes a difference. Join our effort. The future is bright. GUIDELINES to help us support healthy discussion and a supportive group: 1. Be Kind and Courteous We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment. Let's treat everyone with respect.
