Member-led social justice organization fighting for racial, gender and economic justice. Families United for Racial and Economic Equality (FUREE) is a member led Brooklyn-based multiracial program of Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) led by mostly women of color. We organize and unite low-income families to build power to fight against systems of oppression so that the work of all people is valued and all of us have the right and ability to decide and live out our own destinies. We use direct action, leadership development, community organizing and political education to win the changes our members seek. Our guiding principle is that those directly affected by the policies we are seeking to change should lead the organization because they are the true experts. Our members, based on their lived experiences, study and analysis, understand that we will never create a society in which all people have the rights and economic means to live out their destinies until we eliminate the structures that perpetuate inequality based on race, class and gender. This analysis is responsible for the founding of our organization and continues to be prevalent in many aspects of FUREE’s work. One of our organizational criteria for selecting new campaigns is that they must have the ability to expose and change racial, economic and gender inequality, and we are careful to publicly frame our campaigns using the lens of race, class and gender. Our campaigns focus on increasing affordable housing, sustainable jobs and sustainable communities by: (1) Organizing for community-led accountable economic development and against displacement (2) Connecting civic participation to base building and organizing around community-identified demands; (3) Building the power of Black and Latino youth to address barriers to sustainable employment for youth of color (4) Building the power of public housing residents to hold NYCHA accountable to public housing preservation and employment opportunities for unemployed residents FUREE is a member-led organization with a vision and commitment to empowering low income and working people of color who lead social change work through direct action, leadership development, community organizing, civic engagement and political education to change systems, policies and practices that promote inequality based on race, class and gender.
